Lab Grown Diamonds?!
Have you ever heard of Lab-Grown Diamonds?
To put it simply, lab-created diamonds are pure crystallized carbon diamonds grown in a controlled laboratory environment. They have the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as an earth-mined diamond.
Many people, especially socially conscious Millennials, are becoming more interested in synthetic diamonds. “Manufacturers and retailers say that lab-grown diamonds are conflict and cruelty free, are better quality, have little environmental impact and cost 30 to 40 percent less than a natural diamond.” (SF Chronicle)
Are they real? Well, the Federal Trade Commission seems to think so, as they deemed cultured diamonds real diamonds in July 2018:
The FTC’s previous definition of a diamond stated: “A diamond is a natural mineral consisting essentially of pure carbon crystallized in the isometric system.” This is no longer applicable, the commission said Tuesday. The new listing does not include the word “natural.”
“When the commission first used this definition in 1956, there was only one type of diamond product on the market — natural stones mined from the earth,” the FTC said. “Since then, technological advances have made it possible to create diamonds in a laboratory. These stones have essentially the same optical, physical and chemical properties as mined diamonds. Thus, they are diamonds.” (Diamonds.net)
Jewelers have to be careful when they advertise lab-grown diamonds, and make sure to add the words “lab-grown, synthetic, or cultured,” to make sure that buyers know the diamond was not naturally mined. However, they certainly look the part!
De Beers and James Allen both sell luxury lab-grown diamond pieces and many celebrities have been seen rocking these gems on the red carpet. Penelope Cruz, Emma Watson, and Meghan Markle have all worn jewelry made in a lab! (The Knot).
