4 C's of a Diamond
When designing your dream ring, you’ll be able to select for carat, color, clarity, and cut. Read below to get to know the process for designing your perfect ring.
CARAT WEIGHT
Diamond carat weight is the measurement of how much a diamond weights. Each carat can be subdivided into 100 points. Many people assume that prices increase the more carats a diamond weighs, but two diamonds of equal carat weight can be priced very differently depending on their clarity, color, and cut.
COLOR
The color of a diamond is based on it’s lack of color. Diamonds are graded on a scale of D-Z, D being colorless. The further down the scale you go the more hints of yellow a diamond contains. Anything lower than Z goes into the “fancy“ colored diamonds.
CLARITY
Diamonds are formed deep in the earth under extreme heat and pressure. During this process some imperfections, such as cracks or crystals, often form inside the diamond. External imperfections can also occur, and prices of diamonds are directly correlated. GIA has a diamond clarity scale that is used as the industry standard.
CUT
A diamond’s cut refers not only to it’s shape, but more importantly its ability to sparkle and transmit light. Cut is graded according to proportions, symmetry, and polish–the better the cut, the more luminous it is. A diamond’s cut is the most difficult to analyze, and must be very carefully considered when selecting a diamond.
